Guided
River Drift Trip
(Your day)
A sample drift trip of the Cowichan River
lasts approximately six hours not including travel time from Victoria.
If a shuttle service is required, our guide meets you with vehicle and
drift boat in tow.
An
hour and half drive up-island finds you cruising through a valley of rising
hills and spectacular lookouts. Unloading the boat and setting it up takes
about 15 minutes.
You
are outfitted in chest-waders and wading shoes that fit over the waders.
This allows you to walk in the river while staying dry and warm. Your
regular clothes fit underneath the waders. You will also be supplied with
rods, a jacket, flies and everything else that you will need for the day.
Once in the boat, your guide will paddle you down river until the
current takes hold. While paddling, your guide will talk to you about
the techniques for fly fishing this particular river and suggest which
flys to use for the day. If you are unfamiliar with fly-fishing, your
guide will gladly instruct you in correct technique as well as pointing
out the best spots in the river to cast to. At several points in the trip,
you will anchor the boat and walk the river, casting into the sheltered
waters where fish are waiting.
At midday, you take a break for a gourmet lunch; provided by A River
Runs By. This
point is an excellent time to take some photos if you haven't taken many
already. The surrounding environs include abundant bird life and beautiful
scenery.
Your drift down-river continues as your guide takes you to all of
the best "fishy" spots.
As the day reaches a close, your guide paddles the boat to a designated
take-out point where the vehicle is waiting. Taking the boat out and rinsing
it down takes about 10 minutes. Then you remove the waterproof gear and
enjoy the ride back to Victoria or another drop off of your convenience.
Safety
A
River Runs By is fully insured and Coast Guard approved. There will be
a safety briefing before each trip addressing issues such as wading in
the river, getting in and out of the boat, and casting.
We carry a cell phone and your guide is trained in first aid and emergency
procedures.
Equipment
We provide the rods, reels and flys designed specifically for the area
you will be fishing. If you wish to bring your own, you are certainly
welcome to, but you don't have to buy anything to do a trip with us.
Weather
Most of the places where we fish are subject to changing weather patterns.
Your level of comfort will depend on our preparedness and yours. You should
be prepared for rain at any time of year. To keep warm and dry A River
Runs By provides waders, waterproof shells, hats and gloves. In cold weather,
please layer yourself with long underwear, shirts and a sweatshirt.
Food
A gourmet lunch and snacks are included in your fee. Special dietary
concerns should be addressed at the time of booking. Alcoholic beverages
are not permitted in the boat - there will be plenty of pub time at the
end of the day when safety on the river is no longer an issue.
